Montana Forbes construction of image

So this is my final interpretation of the Montana Forbes illustration. I really enjoyed doing this one and think it mostly turned out good. As she uses dark clean lines along with whites and bright colours, it was a lot easier than the Tanya Ling interpretation. When i zoomed in on the Montana Forbes piece, there was still a lot of things that needed cleaned up with an eraser on photoshop, therefore i left some myself.

The hardest part was getting the eyes right. They didnt turn out quite right. I also had some layering issues, especially on the garment which is obvious. The photoshop tools I used during this illustration were the pencil, brush, eraser, magic wand, the clone stamp, the burn and dodge and eyedropper tools and the smudge tool. the tool I found particularly useful was the eyedropper tool to get the colouring right. I also used the "film grain" filter to add texture to the garment.

More Forbes face interpretation

This is my attempt at re-creating the face image she illustarted as shown below. My version is the one pictured to the right.

Some Montana features...

Heres a few sketches I did of Montana Forbes features for the breakdown part of the assignment. They are hand drawn and darkened with curves on photoshop.

Montana Forbes facial features

Here is some of my work on the illustrators facial features.

I did these illustrations by hand then touched it up by photoshop. I curved the lines to darken them slightly. This makes them stand out . I then increased the contrast a little so the colouring would show up brigther.

The sketches below are some tracings of Forbes' facial illustrations done by hand.

Tanya Ling final piece

So this is my final piece for the illustrator Tanya Ling. I have included the original Tanya Ling piece along with my own interpretation.
My illustration is the first post. I think it turned out reasonably well although there are some errors. The face shape is a bit off byt i think the colour of the background is good. The garment coloring had some issues but the general idea for watercolouring technique is shown well.

Tanya Ling limb interpretation

My interpretation of how Ling illustrates arms. They are lengthened and claw like. Below is some quick sketches on the legs.

Interpretation of Tanya lings lip shapes

Tanya Ling seems to draw her lips in one hand motion. They can be broken and the sides and distorted shapes. Here are a few examples of a few brief sketches of my interpretation of her lips:

Below are some of her illustrations to show you how she draws her lips.

Tanya Ling heads and faces

These drawings are some sketch work of Tanya Lings type of heads and facial features. The features are very alien like and elongated. The hair she draws always covers the top of the forward at some part to disfigure the face shape further. This is my interpretations.

Continued...

This sketch is further breakdown of the Tanya Ling figure.

As it was very sketchy when scanned in, some touch ups with photoshop was done. Some erasing and darkening of the lines. This was as well as filling some gaps that didnt show up. I could have prevented this by scanning in a cleaner version.

This one was further sketches on the figure. This one has very little editing, just some brightening on photoshop.

Tanya Ling tracings and outlines

These are my working of the outline of Tanya Lings figures. They are based on the following illustration, names 01221 from her website (www.tanyaling.com)  the illustration was used for The Prada Ready to Wear Campaign for a/w 2009.

some curves were used to darken the sketch lines on photshop. Some brief notes were also made while sketching as you can see .

Practice makes perfect.

The following pictures show the first stages of learning some new skills on photoshop and coral draw.

This first picture is a practice of tracing an outline on coral draw.

The next stage was watercolouring. A small section of the picture has been coloured. It has been done by attempting to re-create the original picture.

The above picture is the original.

The next are the the same as above using a different example.

Montana Forbes

American illustrator Montana Forbes studied visual communications in AIU (American intercontinental university) but now lives and works in London. She grew up between the USA, South Africa and the UK.

Her inspiration is from the female anatomy, fashion and other artists. She calls Stella McCartney her fashion design hero. She would describe herself as quirky and inquisitive. Montana gets her ideas from magazines and art galleries. She also collects feathers and leaves from taking long walks in London.

Forbes’ work focuses on form, line and an intrinsic sense of colour. Each artwork is sketched in pencil or ink then transferred into Photoshop for further reworking and colour additions.

Her clients include BBC TV, Benefit cosmetics, Elle, Gap and the UK and German Times. For the last four years, Montana has worked for The Times Style Magazine on a weekly basis producing artworks.

A work in progress

My two chosen illustrators are named Montana Forbes and Tanya Ling. They are two very different illustrators in their styles, but both very successful and interesting.

Heres examples of their work...

Montana Forbes:

personally i think this girl looks like singer Katy Perry?

Heres a bit about her work and how it's made up:
Montana Forbes is a modern pop art inspired illustrator
·         Pop art style, flashes of bright digitally enhanced colour against whites.
·         The eyes and eyebrows; scruffy/squiggly lines for eyebrows. The eyes are a half
moon/oval shape with, again, white backgrounds and bright enhanced colours.
·         Nose; quite big, made up using lines and large nostrils
·         Lips; full and always coloured.
·         Hair; made up of pointed lines, mostly coloured with areas of white.
·         Lots of use of contrasting colours.
·         The poses are quite sexual and use the female anatomy very well. Lots of skin and curves normally on show.

Tanya Ling:

Note how different Tanya Lings style is compared to Montana Forbes.

Here's some information on the break down of her work:

Tanya Ling uses a distorted approach to the female body;
·         Long fluid limbs and unfinished features
·         Sketchy lines along with painted lines (water colouring features heavily)
·         Big eyes with thick lack lines surrounding them, looking away from focus, yet still detailed.
·         Nose; pointy lines with big spots for nostrils
·         Lips, unfinished at edges with a black distinguishing line to separate lips.
·         Angular poses with detail on elbows and knees bending
·         Big hair, a very distinctive element to each illustration. Lots of waves/curls created through water colouring. Messy looking and rarely one colour
·         Skin tone normally white
·         Outfit details represent high fashion yet they still remain sketchy and unfinished

WELCOME

Hello!

Welcome to my blog!
The aim of this blog is to display the progress of my first design assignment for design research and conceptualisation. The object of the assignment is to research two illustrators and create my own unique style. This will be done by breaking down each illustrators features.

This is my first piece of inspiration i found online. it represents the type of illustrator i will be looking for.
